HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Colonel Bubbamar Al Gaddafudd Special

Welcome everyone to the 151st edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the custom AK was a pile of fudd crap.

HGFC – Is This Custom AK Magic or Tragic? — Poll Results

At this time, the original auction has ended without the AK selling.  However, for any hopefuls out there (c’mon there’s gotta be dozens of you) the item has been relisted.  We hope someone can find it in their heart to save this AK.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a Brooks Gun Works custom AR-15 chambered in .223/5.56. As is tradition, this wood and gold clad gat is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $2,000 Starting Bid or $2,500 Buy It Now.

Let’s see if we can break down this rifle tip to butt (as they do in the Navy, or so I’ve been told).  First off, you have a massive muzzle brake on a semi-automatic rifle chambered in .223/5.56.  Why?  There’s no need for a muzzle brake on AR-15 pattern rifles.  You can, but please understand no one likes you.  Also, why not use a three-prong flash hider?  The rest of the rifle looks like a tacky modern Colt SP1 anyways.

I can’t decide what I dislike more.  Custom receiver sets or billet aluminum receiver sets.  Either way that money is better spent elsewhere.  Also, I think TiN finished everything is just tacky.  I never liked the bolts, and doing it to other parts seems over the top.  Also, once you see the backward installed trigger guard, you can’t unsee it.

Alright, devil’s advocate here.  If we manage to get rid of all the awful engraving, and TiN colors, and put a decent optic on this, it could be interesting.  I’m not advocating for wood furniture on AR pattern rifles, but I’ll concede that it’s an interesting aesthetic.  Maybe something that’s a little less heavily lacquered next time though.

So what do one-of-a-kind wood-furnished AR-15s sell for?  Is there even a market for these things?  Honestly, it’s anyone’s guess at this point, but I’m doubtful that this will sell for $2k or over.  As always though it’s not up to me, so I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
